This was 10 years ago at our 40th reunion ...

2019 marks our 50th year celebration!
First event is our joint school Karaoke Night with Roosevelt, Kaimuki, and McKinley's Class of '69 grads.

We have '69 classmates from all of the schools signed up and there's room for a lot more.  This is great event to get things started for our 50th year celebration.  It not only has karaoke, but a dance floor, food, and a chance to catch up with old friends that you haven't seen from Intermediate or even Elementary schools.

Grab some of your classmates and give Joanne a call.  At our age, every reunion event can be literally taken as a "once in a lifetime" event.  Mumu legs, hips, wheelchairs, canes, and sore backs all welcomed.  The St Louis Alumni Clubhouse is really designed for us senior citizens!!

Our upcoming reunion not only marks 50 years since we graduated, it also presents a unique opportunity to reunite, reminisce, and catch up with classmates from your elementary and intermediate school days.  Although many of our classmates have roots that connect them with other feeder schools, we all have so much in common, even if we never hung out together.

We all lived and grew up in a very special era … the 50's and 60's.  Then experienced the fabulous 70's first hand.  This was our time.  The stories of Statehood, Honolulu Stadium, surfing, social clubs, live music bands, the YIS and Funny Farm dances, hippies, the Peace sign, Viet Nam, etc. are all our memories.  The great music, movies, muscle cars, fashions, and TV shows were all a big part of our youth.

We have so much that we can share and appreciate together, but then we are not getting any younger.  Many of us have already  suffered through physical and medical hardships, lost loved ones and friends, and are finding that our recollection of events from the past is not as clear as it was a few years ago.

What better time than now should we make an effort to spend some time and reconnect with classmates who share the same history?

Your reunion committee met again on January 8th to continue planning and working on the details of our 50th reunion celebration.

It is still scheduled to be held at the Japanese Cultural Center's Manoa Grand Ballroom on Saturday, August 10, 2019 from 6 to 10 pm.  Cost will be $69 (how fitting).

We have confirmed Doug Oshiro to provide sound, music and photos, as well as Na Hoku Hanohano winner George Kuo (also a Kalani grad) to share his music with us.  The committee is also looking to hold a golf tournament during the week at the Navy Marine Golf Course.

We will be post more information and taking reservations soon for our banquet, but for now, please plan ahead and mark your calendars.

If you have any questions, please contact the committee at: kalaniclassof69@gmail.com or call Jo (Amioka) Chikuma at (808) 235-3747.

Getting Ready for KALANI FIVE-O

Your reunion committee has been meeting regularly to set the details for our KHS Class of '69 50th Year Reunion event on 2019.  As of our last meeting we have set the food menu and part of the entertainment for the evening.

Two-time Na Hoku Hanohano awardee and Kalani grad (Class of '73), George Kuo, will start things off for us for the first hour and a half.  We'll then turn things over to Doug Oshiro, who will provide music, photography (candids and groups), and even karaoke or dance music if we desire.

The committee is still working on the details.  Doug will offer a DVD with about 20 songs from our golden era along with the pictures from the event for $25.

The emphasis for the event will be to have fun, food, and enjoy the entertainment, but still leave enough time and opportunity for us to talk stories and reminisce on the memories and the good old days we spent at Kalani … and together.

Again our 50th Class Reunion will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the Grand Manoa Ballroom of the Japanese Cultural Center from 6 -10 pm.

Start planning now.  Call your classmates and make arrangements to attend and meet the rest of our Class of '69 classmates.
